Erin’s Journey: Gaining Confidence and Experience in Marketing
As part of National Careers Week, we’re spotlighting inspiring apprentices who are earning, learning, and building their careers. Meet Erin, a Multi-Channel Marketing Apprentice, whose journey showcases the power of hands-on experience and professional growth.
For Erin, an apprenticeship was the perfect way to combine learning with real-world experience. Now well into her role as a Multi-Channel Marketing Apprentice, she has developed a diverse skill set and a strong belief in her own abilities.

Choosing an Apprenticeship Over University
University wasn’t the right fit for Erin. Instead, she wanted a route that would allow her to keep learning while also gaining practical experience.
“I wanted to keep learning, but uni just didn’t appeal to me. I wanted to earn, learn, and meet my personal goals.”
Her passion for marketing was sparked during her A-Level photography course, and from there, she took the initiative to find opportunities.
“I found the role during my weekly job search on Indeed. I also asked people for advice on my CV. If you really want it, take the initiative and push for it.”
One thing Erin is keen to highlight is that apprenticeships are for everyone. “It doesn’t matter how old you are—it’s not a step back.”

Developing Skills and Gaining Trust in Herself
Erin’s role is fast-paced and varied. She creates assets across multiple channels, writes content for brochures and blogs, schedules social posts, and collaborates with other departments. Through her apprenticeship, she has not only gained technical skills but has also grown personally.
“The most valuable skill I’ve learned is trusting myself. I used to constantly seek reassurance, but now I’m much more comfortable and confident in my own ability.”
The learning element of the apprenticeship includes coursework linked to her job, requiring her to explain what she does and why, ensuring a deep understanding of her role.

Support and Overcoming Challenges
Balancing work and study isn’t always easy. Erin admits that juggling both can be challenging, but organisation is key.
“We block out time on Fridays to focus on our apprenticeship work. It helps us stay on top of everything.”
Working at a global technology company was initially daunting, especially in marketing, where knowing the product is crucial. However, over time, Erin has built her knowledge and confidence.
She credits her support system at Ideagen, including mentors, fellow apprentices, and regular check-ins with her line manager, for making the journey smoother.

Biggest Success: Networking and Gaining Experience in a Global Company
For Erin, one of the standout moments of her apprenticeship has been the networking opportunities.
“It’s a global company, and I’ve had incredible experiences. Just the other day, I had lunch with the Chief Legal Officer—it felt so natural! Everyone is so welcoming.”
Being an apprentice, she says, is no longer daunting. “People understand that you’re here to learn. Expectations are lower in a good way—it’s about getting your foot in the door. By the time I finish, I’ll have two years of experience alongside my learning.”

Advice for Future Apprentices
Erin encourages others to take the leap and not let self-doubt hold them back.
“Be confident. Don’t think negatively, even if it’s out of your comfort zone. A positive mindset will get you further than you think.”
She also wants to disprove common misconceptions about apprenticeships.
“I was so worried about not having experience. But they’re not looking for experience; they want people who are passionate and willing to learn. Try hard, be determined, and be your best.”

Looking to the Future
Once her apprenticeship ends, Erin hopes to continue developing her skills and taking on more responsibility.
“I want to be fully confident in my role, have people trust me, and be able to plan ahead. I want to come up with solutions that keep us ahead of the game.”
Would she recommend an apprenticeship?
“A million times yes! If you’re unsure about uni or what you want to do, an apprenticeship is a great way to explore your career options. You get paid, gain experience, and avoid student debt. It’s amazing! Plus, I’m even saving for a house while learning and growing in my career.”
Erin’s story highlights the benefits of apprenticeships—not just as an alternative to university, but as a powerful way to kickstart a successful career.
